Other Projects

Photography

Through my studies in journalism and mass communications,

I've captured moments that bring stories to life. Below are some of my favorite projects.

Iowa City's inaugural outdoor recreation festival encourages community to "Get Outside!"

On Oct. 8, 2023, the City of Iowa City’s Parks and Recreation Department held its first-ever outdoor recreation festival in City Park to encourage locals to engage with the community’s natural landscapes.

The free event, Get Outside!, offered a wide range of activities across the park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., ranging from canoeing on the Iowa River to archery to interacting with Iowa’s native wildlife. While many festivalgoers were families with young children, the festival’s skydiving demonstration captured the attention of all ages as five jumpers from Skydive Iowa landed in an open field in lower City Park.

Shopping in the Iowa City Downtown District: a look inside Revival

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, Grace Katzer, a student at the University of Iowa, decided to use her break in between classes to visit Revival, one of her favorite shops in the Iowa City Downtown District.  Revival is a female-owned boutique with a collection of new, used, and vintage clothing and accessories.

Graphic Design

With experience in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Canva, I've created a variety of graphic design projects for my classes. Notably, some of these designs served as client deliverables for organizations like the North Liberty Fire Department and Field to Family, who could chose to use these materials in their communication strategies.

Book Cover Design Project

As part of my Visual Communication and Design course, I created two distinct book covers in Adobe Illustrator — one using an asymmetrical layout and the other symmetrical — for the title of my choice.

These designs were selected for inclusion in the 2025 Student Exhibition hosted by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

In my Strategic Communication Writing course, our class collaborated with the North Liberty Fire Department to develop content aimed at enhancing their volunteer recruitment initiatives. For each project, my professor selected five students' work to share with the department for consideration or inspiration. The following are some of my favorite projects that were chosen to be submitted to the department:

Sample Social Media Posts

In one of my nonprofit courses, our class collaborated with Field to Family, a nonprofit focused on improving access to and education about healthy local food. I developed these 10 evergreen posts for the organization to use and ensured they aligned with their mission objectives and branding.

Podcasting

As a storyteller, I've embraced podcasts as a powerful medium for sharing narratives that connect with audiences. With training in Audacity and Descript, I've helped craft engaging audio stories that captivate listeners.

SJMC Audio Production course: A Campus in Conflict

Podcast description: Spring 1970. Turmoil and tension grip the United States. With the Vietnam War raging, young Americans—on campuses nationwide and at the University of Iowa—are rising in protest. "A Campus in Conflict" traces the roots of activism at Iowa, where students grappled with conscience, conflict, and change. Drawing on firsthand accounts and archival material, this limited series explores how a quiet campus became a stage for resistance—and what that legacy means today. Podcasts by undergraduate students in Iowa's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Episode 3: Emerging Leaders and Tough Decisions

With student resistance rising, University President William “Sandy” Boyd faces difficult decisions about how to conclude the school year safely. Meanwhile, ROTC student Richard Tyner grapples with how to handle the upcoming Governor’s Day celebration and the potential threat of clashes between students and military troops on campus, and former members of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) discuss their efforts to protest the university’s involvement in the war. Host James McCurtis explores the inner conflicts and uncertainties that loomed over the campus as the spring semester came to a close.

I was one of the associate producers for this episode!

Event Planning

During my Foundations of Event Management course, I developed a comprehensive event proposal for a nonprofit based in Iowa City. Covering everything from the event concept to logistical arrangements, the plan outlined every element needed for successful execution, combining creativity with strategic planning.

Event proposal: Paws and Applause

The event proposal below, created for the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation, presents a concept for a celebratory fashion show marking the completion of a new addition to the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. The 35-page report outlines every logistical detail, all while reflecting the organization's branding. Included are examples of marketing materials I designed for the hypothetical event, from eye-catching posters to social media content.
